Whole Life Insurance

Explore lifelong protection with a clearer understanding of premiums, guarantees, and cash value. A policy should fit the years ahead as well as today’s budget.

Quotes are estimates. Availability and approval depend on state, carrier, and underwriting.

How whole life insurance works

Whole life is a form of permanent life insurance. It is designed to remain in force for the insured person’s lifetime when contractual requirements are met. Traditional policies typically include scheduled premiums, a death benefit, and guaranteed cash values defined by the contract.

The important question is not simply whether the policy lasts for life. It is whether permanent protection addresses a need you expect to keep, and whether its payment schedule is sustainable.

Separate guarantees from illustrations

Ask to see which values are guaranteed and which depend on assumptions. Participating policies may pay dividends, but dividends are not guaranteed. A sales illustration should not be treated as a prediction of what your policy will produce.

Compare the guaranteed cash value at several points with the total premiums paid. Early cash values can be limited, and surrendering a policy may produce a result that differs substantially from the total you contributed.

Consider the cost and commitment

For the same initial death benefit, whole life generally costs more than term insurance. That difference matters when a household needs a substantial amount of income replacement. Compare what each option protects before reducing coverage just to obtain a particular product.

Before applying, think through a lower-income year, a change of job, or a new family expense. Ask what options exist if premiums become difficult to maintain and how those options affect the benefit.

Using cash value is a policy decision

A policy loan is borrowing against the policy, not a free withdrawal of extra money. Interest and outstanding loans can affect policy values and the amount paid to beneficiaries. Ask for an explanation of loan terms and the consequences of lapse before using cash value.

Bring existing coverage to your review. Replacing a policy deserves careful comparison of guarantees, costs, new underwriting, and what you would give up. Do not cancel existing protection before understanding the new policy’s effective date and conditions.

Questions to help you decide

Is whole life the same as universal life?

No. Both are permanent insurance categories, but premium structures, guarantees, and policy mechanics differ. Review the actual contract and illustration.

Does cash value replace the death benefit?

The relationship depends on the contract. Do not assume beneficiaries receive both the stated death benefit and an additional separate cash-value payment.

Can I compare whole life and term?

Yes. A side-by-side review can show the protection period, premium commitment, cash-value features, and risks of each option.
