What is final expense insurance?
Final expense insurance is commonly used to describe life coverage intended for funeral costs and other end-of-life expenses. Many products sold for this purpose have smaller benefits than policies designed to replace years of income. Product structures vary, so review the actual contract.
Start with an estimate of the obligations you want to address and the resources already available. Existing life insurance or money set aside may cover part of the need.
Look beyond the monthly premium
Compare the benefit amount, total premium commitment, and conditions for payment. Ask whether premiums are level, how long payments continue, and whether the benefit is immediate or subject to a graded period.
An inexpensive-looking policy may provide less protection than expected if you compare only the payment. Use the same benefit amount when reviewing different offers, and make sure the ongoing premium fits your budget.
Ask about health questions and waiting periods
A simplified application is not the same as guaranteed acceptance. Some policies ask health questions or use other information in underwriting. Guaranteed-issue and graded-benefit products can have important payment limitations during an initial period.
Ask for a plain-language explanation of what beneficiaries would receive for different causes of death during the early policy years. Review exclusions and limitations in writing rather than assuming every policy works the same way.
Choose a beneficiary and keep the plan accessible
Discuss who would receive the payment and how that person would locate the policy. Confirm how to update contact information and beneficiary designations. A policy helps most when the people involved know it exists.
If replacing coverage, compare the current policy with the proposed one before acting. New underwriting, costs, and early-period limitations can matter. AGBI can help review available choices and explain the questions to ask.
Questions to help you decide
Is final expense insurance the same as prepaying a funeral?
No. A life insurance policy and a prepaid funeral arrangement are different products. Check the payee, benefits, and contract terms of each.
Is approval guaranteed?
Only specific products offer guaranteed issue, and eligibility conditions still apply. Other applications require underwriting.
Can I choose a smaller benefit?
Available amounts depend on the carrier, product, and eligibility. Compare the remaining need with a premium you can maintain.
